About Igatpuri

Igatpuri — Gateway to the Sahyadri Mountains

Igatpuri is a small hill station at the northern edge of the Western Ghats (Sahyadri range), sitting at 588 metres above sea level on the crest of Kasara Ghat, National Highway 3. It is the last major town before the Mumbai Metropolitan Region when travelling from Nashik, and the first town after the ghat when approaching from Mumbai — a position that has made it a natural stopping point and a logical base for exploring the surrounding Sahyadri wilderness.

The town is known for four things that draw very different kinds of visitors: the Vipassana International Academy (world headquarters of the Vipassana meditation tradition, attracting 10-day course participants from every country), the annual Fireflies Festival (a June phenomenon where the surrounding jungles fill with synchronised fireflies), monsoon trekking and waterfalls across the adjacent Sahyadri peaks, and Bhavali Dam — a scenic reservoir that becomes spectacular during the July–September monsoon overflow season.

We are based here. When you book a local taxi in Igatpuri, the driver grew up here. They know which waterfall is most accessible in July, which resort road floods first in August, and exactly how long the Tringalwadi Fort trek takes at a relaxed pace. That local knowledge is what this guide is built from.

The top places to visit in Igatpuri are Bhavali Dam, Camel Valley, Tringalwadi Fort, Vaitarna Dam, and the Vipassana International Academy. The Fireflies Festival in June is the most unique and highly anticipated annual event.
