About Trimbakeshwar

Trimbakeshwar — Jyotirlinga and Source of the Godavari

Trimbakeshwar is a small temple town 28 km from Nashik in the foothills of the Sahyadri mountains. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas — sacred shrines of Lord Shiva — and the only one housing a Shivalinga with three faces, representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva simultaneously. The town sits at the foot of Brahmagiri Hill, from which the Godavari river — one of India's most sacred rivers — originates.

Two things make Trimbakeshwar uniquely significant beyond its Jyotirlinga status. First, the Kaal Sarp Dosh puja — a Vedic ritual to neutralise the astrological Kaal Sarp Dosh — is performed exclusively at this temple, making it a mandatory destination for anyone whose horoscope prescribes this remedy. Second, it is the site of the Nashik Kumbh Mela (Simhastha), held every 12 years on the banks of the Godavari — the next edition is in 2027.

We operate from Igatpuri, 80 km from Trimbakeshwar, and from Nashik, 28 km away. Our drivers have been conducting darshan tours to Trimbakeshwar for years and know the VIP darshan entry points, the waiting times on each day of the week, the registered pandit contact for Kaal Sarp Dosh puja, and the road conditions on Shravan Mondays — the kind of operational knowledge that cannot be found in any travel guide.

Important Notes

  • Timings are subject to change during festivals and Kumbh Mela. Always confirm before visiting.
  • VIP darshan (paid ticket) reduces waiting time significantly — recommended on weekends and Shravan Mondays.
  • The Shivalinga is not always visible to general darshan visitors — only the base of the linga is shown. Special darshan allows closer access.
  • Mobile phones and bags must be deposited outside before entering. Allow 20 minutes for this.
  • Dress code: traditional attire preferred. Shoulders and knees must be covered.
  • Best days to visit: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday — shortest queues, typically under 60 minutes.
  • Worst days: Shravan Mondays and Purnima (full moon) — expect 3–5 hour waits without VIP.

Sacred Rituals

Puja and Ritual Guide — Trimbakeshwar Temple

Trimbakeshwar temple has three pujas that are exclusively performed here and cannot be performed at any other temple in India. Understanding each is essential before planning your visit.

Kaal Sarp Dosh Puja

The most sought-after puja at Trimbakeshwar. Performed to neutralise the astrological effect of Kaal Sarp Dosh — a condition in a birth chart where all planets fall between Rahu and Ketu. The Trimbakeshwar temple trust is the only authority to officially sanction this puja. Only registered pandits from the temple's list are authorised to perform it.

Duration: 2 - 3 hourscost: 5,000 - 15,000Booking: Advance Required

Narayan Nagbali Puja

A three-day ritual performed to release ancestral spirits (Pitru Dosha) from earthly bondage. Exclusively performed at Trimbakeshwar. Involves Narayan Bali (for unnatural death ancestors) and Nagbali (for ancestral sin of killing a serpent). Requires advance arrangement of 3 nights in Trimbakeshwar.

Duration: 3 dayscost: 15,000 - 40,000Booking: Advance Required

Tripindi Shraadh

A one-day ancestral ritual performed when three consecutive generations have missed annual Shraadh ceremonies. Trimbakeshwar is one of very few places where this ritual is performed with full Vedic authority. Required before performing Kaal Sarp Dosh puja in some horoscope cases.

Duration: 4 - 6 hourscost: 5,000 - 12,000Booking: Advance Required

Rudrabhishek / Laghu Rudra

Regular Shiva Abhishek performed daily at the Jyotirlinga. Available to any devotee with advance booking. Includes bathing the Shivalinga with milk, honey, curd, and Gangajal while chanting the Shri Rudram. Shorter and more accessible than the specialised pujas — ideal for first-time visitors.

Duration: 45 min - 2 hourscost: 1,100 - 5,000Booking: Advance Required

Attractions

Places to Visit in Trimbakeshwar

Beyond the Jyotirlinga temple, Trimbakeshwar has a compact set of sacred and natural attractions that can be visited in a single day with good planning.

Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga Temple

The main temple housing one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The three-faced Shivalinga is set in a deep pit — only the tips of the three lingas are visible during darshan. The temple was built by Peshwa Nanasaheb (Balaji Bajirao) in the 18th century in classic Hemadpanthi black stone architecture.

Kushavarta Kund

The sacred tank inside the temple complex considered one of the sources of the Godavari river. Pilgrims perform ritual bathing here before darshan. The Brahmagiri mountain behind the temple is the actual geographical source of the Godavari — the Kushavarta Kund collects this water.

Brahmagiri Hill Trek

The sacred hill above Trimbakeshwar from which the Godavari river originates. A 2-hour trek to the summit passes the Godavari source spring, Brahmagiri temple, and offers panoramic views of the Sahyadri range. The trek is accessible year-round but most beautiful during monsoon (July–September).

Gangadwar

The point at which the Godavari river is believed to emerge from the earth at Trimbakeshwar. A small, relatively unknown spot that most tour groups miss entirely — only a local guide or operator would direct you here. Located at the base of Brahmagiri Hill, a 15-minute walk from the temple.

Peak Season Guide

Visiting Trimbakeshwar During Shravan Month

Shravan month (July–August) is the most auspicious period for Shiva worship in Hinduism. Trimbakeshwar during Shravan receives visitor numbers that no online guide accurately warns you about — on Shravan Mondays, the queue begins before 5am and waiting time for regular darshan can exceed 5 hours. This is operational knowledge from years of conducting tours on these exact days.

Temple opens at 4:00am during Shravan month — 90 minutes earlier than usual

Shravan Mondays attract 50,000–1,00,000 pilgrims — all roads to Trimbakeshwar are congested by 6am

Parking is not available within 3 km of the temple on Shravan Mondays — our drivers know the bypass roads

VIP darshan tickets sell out — book through us in advance, not at the counter on the day

Practical Shravan Survival Guide

Depart by 4am from Nashik. The Nashik-Trimbak Road is bumper-to-bumper from 6am on Shravan Mondays. A 4am departure gets you to the temple before the worst of the crowd arrives.
Book VIP darshan in advance. Do not rely on buying a VIP ticket at the counter on the day — they are frequently sold out by 7am. We arrange VIP darshan as part of our tour packages.
Carry only what you need. All bags must be deposited at the cloak room before entering. A long queue wait with heavy bags is exhausting. Carry only a small cloth bag with puja items and ID.
Visit on a weekday if flexibility exists. Tuesday to Thursday during non-peak Shravan weeks have queues of under 60 minutes. The spiritual merit is identical to a Monday visit — the timing is simply more practical.
Stay hydrated and wear comfortable footwear. The temple floor is marble and reflects heat strongly in summer. The queue area is outdoors. Light cotton clothing and slippers (not sandals with straps) are ideal.

What Pilgrims Say

Trimbakeshwar Darshan Reviews

  5/5

"We booked the Kaal Sarp Dosh puja package from Igatpuri. The driver arranged a registered pandit, took us at exactly the right muhurta time, navigated us through the crowd on what was a very busy Tuesday, and waited 3 hours during the puja without any complaint. The post-puja Jyotirlinga darshan was deeply moving."

V

Varsha Kale

  5/5

"Visited on Shravan Monday — which I now know is an extreme event. The driver had booked VIP darshan in advance, knew to depart Nashik at 4am, and had us through the VIP queue in under 45 minutes while the general queue was already 4 hours long. That local knowledge was invaluable."

Ashok Sharma

"We came from Mumbai for the Narayan Nagbali puja — a 3-day ritual that required careful planning. They arranged transport, accommodation recommendations, pandit coordination, and daily cab between our hotel and the temple. Everything was handled. We only had to focus on the puja."

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions — Trimbakeshwar Temple

Trimbakeshwar temple opens at 5:30am with the Kakad Aarti and closes at 9pm after the Shej Aarti. The Madhyanh Puja at noon briefly closes the temple for about 45 minutes. During Shravan month (July–August), the temple opens at 4:00am. On Shravan Mondays, the queue begins by 4:30am and waits for general darshan can exceed 5 hours — VIP darshan is strongly recommended.

Kaal Sarp Dosh puja is a Vedic ritual performed to neutralise the astrological effect of Kaal Sarp Dosh — a planetary configuration in a birth chart where all planets fall between Rahu and Ketu. Trimbakeshwar is the only Jyotirlinga temple where this puja is canonically authorised by the temple trust. The puja takes 2 to 3 hours and requires a registered pandit from the temple's approved list. We arrange both transport and pandit as part of our puja tour package.

Trimbakeshwar is 28 km from Nashik city centre. The drive takes approximately 40 to 45 minutes via the Nashik-Trimbak Road under normal traffic. On Shravan Mondays and festival days, the same distance can take 2 to 3 hours due to heavy pilgrim traffic — a 4am departure from Nashik is essential on these days.

VIP darshan at Trimbakeshwar is available by purchasing a paid darshan ticket at the temple counter — available from 6am while stocks last — or through an authorised tour operator who can arrange it in advance. VIP darshan reduces waiting time from potentially 5 hours to under 45 minutes on busy days. On Shravan Mondays, VIP tickets at the counter are exhausted by 7am. We include VIP darshan in our tour packages.

For the shortest queue: weekday mornings (Tuesday to Thursday) outside of Shravan month, arriving before 7am. Queue time is typically under 60 minutes. For the most spiritually significant visit: Shravan Mondays, Nag Panchami, and Shivratri — but these require early departure (4am), advance VIP darshan booking, and patience for crowds.

Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga is unique among all 12 Jyotirlingas for two reasons — it is the only one with a three-faced Shivalinga (Trimukhi) representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva simultaneously, and it sits at the source of the Godavari river, one of India's most sacred rivers. It is also the only temple where Kaal Sarp Dosh puja, Narayan Nagbali puja, and Tripindi Shraadh are officially performed.

Yes — it is very common and well-manageable with an early start. The recommended itinerary: 6am at Trimbakeshwar for Jyotirlinga darshan (with VIP pass), Brahmagiri hill viewpoint by 8:30am, back in Nashik by 10am for Kalaram Temple and Ramkund in Panchavati, then Pandavleni Caves by 1pm, and a Nashik vineyard visit in the afternoon if desired. Our drivers plan this sequence precisely to minimise queue times at each location.
